The God Game—Where Does Life Begin?

Since when did we start playing God? Have we taken our freedoms so far as to supersede the highest form of authority—God Himself? Whether you believe in God or not, you have to believe in some sort of moral absolutes—stealing, lying, and killing are all wrong. So where do we draw the line? Where does life begin?

According to medical science, a baby’s heart begins beating after 18 days of conception. Also, the baby begins having brain wave activity after only 40 days. So in as little as two and a half weeks, a child begins functioning. Now to contrast that with the opposite end of the spectrum, a person is declared dead medically if one of two things are present—lack of heartbeat (a “flatline”) or a lack of brain wave activity.

So wouldn’t it make sense that if life ends with these things it must begin with them as well? And essentially 100% of all abortions take place after the 7th week of pregnancy, well after the heart has begun to beat.

So even though medical science defines an unborn child as alive, we as Americans trust a court ruling over professionals. And that’s the topic of the next post: Can a court really determine life?

  1. ==>So wouldn’t it make sense that if life ends with these things it must begin with them as well?

If I decided that all there was to life was a heartbeat and active brain waves then it could make sense. Personally, I’m not satisfied with these two elements being the sole measure of ‘life’.

In addition to the ‘soul’ issue — which to my knowledge can’t be definitely proven or dis-proven…

    there is the ‘viability’ issue.

My current dictionary continues to define viable as…

    1. capable of living: esp: having attained such form and development as to be normally capable of surviving outside the mother’s womb

There are just way too many factors involved for one person to make a decision for another around this choice —

  2. We’ve been “playing God” since the first time a doctor intervened and saved a patient who was mortally sick.

    Get used to it.

  3. I used to be wishy-washy on this issue but having a baby of our own has changed everything. Seeing you baby at 10 weeks on a sonogram monitor is a life changing event. After seeing our little “bean” jumping around I now know that life begins at conception.

  4. The Bible does not condemn healing, but it does condemn murder. That is the difference between healing and murder. There is no comparison. Healing is not playing God.

Thankyou Lauren for your blogging on this issue. It really must hurt God to see parents allow His precious unborn children to be murdered. The only consolation I have is that they are now safe in Heaven.

  5. If you’re going to quote the bible at me, you’ll have to show me where it defines abortion as murder. In fact you’ll have to find anybody who defines abortion as murder.

  6. Tony, thanks for the comments.

I, for one, do define abortion as murder. It is the murder of innocent babies. Also, to answer your question, here are a few passages from the Bible that show God recognizes a child as a human being while they are still in the mother’s womb:

Jeremiah 1:5 “Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations.”

Psalm 71:5-6 “For thou art my hope, O Lord God: thou art my trust from my youth. By thee have I been holden up from the womb. Thou art he that took me out of my mother’s bowels: my praise shall be continually of thee.”

As you can see, God sees the unborn child as a human being whom He loves. And since He sees a child as a human, this verse would hold true: “Thou shalt not kill” (Exodus 20:13).

The Bible also says in Proverbs 6:16-17, “These six things doth the Lord hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him: a proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood.”

I don’t know how you can get more innocent than an unborn, defenseless baby.

Those are just some verses to think about. If you are looking for a verse that comes out and says, Thou shalt not kill unborn babies, you won’t find one. You also won’t find one that says, Thou shalt not cheat on your taxes, but we all know it’s morally wrong.

    Hope that helps!

  7. The sections you quote say nothing of murder. Indeed I note that both are from the Old Testament and are also found in the Torah. Jewish thinking on abortion is by and large

  8. quite different, and the idea that abortion is murder is absent from that interpretation.

So you can’t cite the bible as authoritative on this matter, sorry. Other interpretations of the same (extremely vague) passages are possible.

Your claiims are just far, far too extreme to be taken seriously. Try again when you have something more reasonable to say and can provide strong support for yuor opinions.

  9. Tony, thanks for trying to fog up the Bible on this topic. You’ve tried, but nice try and way to go on the effort. The Bible is actually very clear on this ethical issue. It is very authoritative. It is packed full of defending innocent unborn life passages. First, lets start with “killing”. Did you know that some killing is endorsed in the Bible? When the Bible speaks of killing that is justifiable like in Romans 13:1-7 it states the right to “bear the sword”…the right of the state to exercise in punishing evil and to never attack the innocent (Romans 13:4). It is the simple eye for an eye, etc. In Exodus 20:13 the word for “kill” is rahaz in Hebrew. I hope I don’t lose you using Hebrew here…I know you don’t know Hebrew, so I will define everything for you. Rahaz, a word for killing used a lot in the OT about 50 times. It means violent and personal killing. It is used for a person accused of murder. The word is never used in war killings. So the verse…”thou shalt not kill” and the word kill here clearly referring to “murder” stands as a clear and resounding indictment of the killing of innocent unborn children. Psalm 139:13 tells of God forming us and making us in our mother’s womb…so aborting that process is saying “God, take a seat…we say who comes and who goes.” The destruction of conceived human life, whether embryonic, fetal, or viable is an assault on the unique-forming work of God. You are putting an assault on God. Psalm 139:13; Job 31:15 You attacked Lauren on the passage about shedding of innocent blood. Well there are 20 passages that state that. So it seems pretty important if it needs to be restated often. Innocent blood would include the blood of children (Psalm 106:38). Jeremiah puts it this way “don’t shed innocent blood”. Blood of the unborn is the most innocent blood that flows in the world. So when you look at the word kill in tons of support passages against abortion you need to understand the biblical languages…the majority of the OT was written in Hebrew. The support and passages are immense. Your opinions are fluff and dim when put up against God and what He has spoken in His Word…the Bible. Your claims are weak Tony, so don’t write and waste our time when we already know what God says about “killing innocent blood = unborn”. You have weak support for your opinions…maybe try not using straw for your building material.

  10. Repeatedly saying that the bible is clear doesn’t make it so. Go argue with a rabbi.

  11. It doesn’t take me saying that the Bible is clear and complete truth to make it so…..God has already stated it through His Word. Rabbi’s only read the Torah (the first 5 books of the Bible)…so why go argue with a rabbi who doesn’t know the entire Bible? Also, Rabbis are still waiting for the coming of Messiah…Messiah has already come..Jesus Christ…and Jesus didn’t state it once He stated it several times (I can give you a whole list of references in the Bible if you would like.) If Rabbis would read the New Testament of the Bible they would see that Jesus Christ came and fulfilled prophecy of the Old Testament. So again, why argue with a Rabbi who only reads the first 5 books of the Bible? They would be lost very quickly…I read the entire Bible. Well, while you mentioned “that repeately saying something doesn’t make it so….Well guess what ….you see saying that the earth evolved, fossils are billions and quaddrillion years old, and that we came from apes repeatedly doesn’t clear up anything or make it so….and continous denial of God’s Word the Bible by people doesn’t stop the Bible from being truth. You see when Richard Dawkins dies and his attempted assaults cease…the Bible is still gonna be truth. Come again Tony…leave Dawkins next to Darwin on the shelf and let them collect dust.

  12. So God has stated that the bible is the complete and clear truth. Where has he said this?

  13. Lots of verses that answer your question. Also the very fact like I stated earlier…the prophecy that was written in the O.T. has been fulfilled by Jesus in the N.T…..exactly as it was foretold. Jesus Christ the way the truth and the life as we read in the Bible.

Ps.119:160 The entirety of Your word is truth,And every one of Your righteous judgments endures forever.

John 1:14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.

John 8:30-32 Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”

John 17:17 Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth.

  14. To continue with the truth the Jesus came and fulfilled OT prophecy. Jesus speaking and says in

Mat 5:17 “Don’t suppose for a minute that I have come to demolish the Scriptures–either God’s Law or the Prophets. I’m not here to demolish but to complete. I am going to put it all together, pull it all together in a vast panorama.

  15. (Response to poster that mentioned viability as an issue to consider when life begins)

Viability is not a legitimate issue when referring to whether or not abortions are right and should be legal. Consider this, viability (basically the ability to survive in an extrauterine environment) is not a definitive line, medical advancements have continued to push back the point where an infant can be viable. So, does that mean that one day it is fine to abort babies up to a certain point until medical advancements prove that the baby can be viable at an earlier age?

I’m sorry, but when it comes to life and death situations I prefer to make decisions based on what is DEFINITE. A standard (viability) that is capable of being changed by medical advances is not definite enough to determine that a baby’s life can be terminated.

Life begins at conception. Conception is the only DEFINITE point where the line can be drawn. There is a definite beginning to the process of life for a human. At the point of conception, the zygote is beginning a continual process that does not end until life has ended.

To be wrong in this situation is to be a murderer. How anyone that believes in any type of a moral code can justify abortion by using a standard that is subject to change at any time is beyond belief.

  16. Zach, so what you’re saying is that the bible is clear and true and the word of God because the bible says so.

Suppose there existed two or more holy books, all of which contain proclamations that they are the clear and true word of God. How would you distinguish which, if any of them, were actually the word of God?

  17. Already stated that Tony…Jesus Christ fulfilled what God declared He would fulfill. (John 19:28 Jesus, seeing that everything had been completed so that the Scripture record might also be complete) There is no other “holy” book as you put it that claims this truth. Mormons add to the Word of God, by saying their book of Mormon is a new reveled testament to the Bible…it can’t be so…God’s Word says that nothing should be added or taken away from it. Revelation 22:19 And if anyone takes words away from this book of prophecy, God will take away from him his share in the tree of life and in the holy city, which are described in this book. Jesus Christ came and fulfilled everything that was declared that He would come and fulfill. You need another example: Muslims again add to the Word of God and take away from it to make their religion. Every world religioin tries to add or take away somewhere from the Bible. Also, I’ll add no other religion declares their “god” to be risen. Jesus Christ rose from the dead on the 3rd day. So in comparison…the world “religions” and their gods…well, we are waiting for them to rise…their “holy books” tell of no such things…could it be that these “holy books” are man-made religions? You see….John 1:1 says In the BEGINNING was the Word…and the Word was with God…and the Word was God. God’s Word exsisted at the beginning….the Bible is God’s spoken Word for us….in complete, finished, and true.

  18. The problem is that you only know those things to be true because they’re written in the bible.

I really ought to learn not to argue with those who can convince themselves that something must be true simply because it’s written in a book.

  19. Faith cometh by hearing Tony, and hearing by the Word of God 🙂 Romans 10:17….you see there is an answer actually to every answer you have asked…you see the Bible isn’t a book just about God…it is a book FROM God…it is GOD’s Word to us. Psalm 119 says God’s Word is the lamp for our feet and it is the light for our path…we are to hide God’s Word in our heart….the N.T. tells us how are people to know about God? without a preacher? A preacher or someone who proclaims God’s truth from God’s Word….God’s Word is not just another “holy book” of the world’s religions….it is God’s Love Letter to man…it tells of Jesus Christ, His Son, and the Savior….it invites you to a relationship with God because of what Jesus Christ has done for you. You see books are written about History so we can learn from history. God’s Word which wasn’t just written by men Tony…it was written by men who God spoke to…and through. 1 Peter 1:21 For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit….the Bible is how God chose to speak to us…

  20. I could talk to a Muslim, a Hindu, a Jew or adherents of any number of other religions and I’d get the same answer. I was raised on the bible, I know it contains nothing much of worth, and what little of worth is there is duplicated in the words of people who never even heard of the bible.

  21. Already answered that part too Tony….The Bible states that nothing should be added or taken away from it…all the religions you mentioned add or take away…also, your missing the only Savior of man in all of those false hopes and false beliefs. You see when Jesus Christ was here on earth He stated “I am the WAY, the TRUTH, and the LIFE…and no one comes unto the Father (God) but by ME. Jesus wasn’t one of many ways, or many truths….He is the only way…there isn’t other ways…Hindu is trying to add another way….Muslims the same…name any other false belief to the equation and they are trying to “add”. Why confuse the case? Why have a bunch of different ways to God…you see every religion you name to me is based on YOUR works and your good works and what you can muster up for being “good” for God. The Bible…the one and only true story of hope….you see you don’t need to do anything for God….Jesus Christ has already done it…He is the only way the only truth…the only life. “Raised” on the Bible…so forced to sit down and read it until it hurts….yeah, you probably didn’t find it enjoyable…maybe reading it and seeing it as a love story and God’s love for you in sending Jesus Christ to die for your sins. You see I was “raised” on the Bible…but not a forcing of reading about a religion, but rather an encouraging of a relationship.
